For the second reading, I chose to investigate the artwork of Joan Jonas via this article on ArtForum https://www.artforum.com/features/barry-schwabsky-joan-jonas-552372/.
I selected this article not only because I fascinated with the frontrunners of "digital art" or pioneers of digital aesthetics, but I also appreciate Jonas' blend of installation/performance art and analog objects with digital work. To me, they seem inextricably linked and they build off each other, synergizing digital forms like projection and television while merging them with real life performances and bodies.
The work that I am most interested in discussing is her work Glass Puzzle II (1974-2000). I like this installation because it is a kind of marriage of the two mediums I work in myself which is sculpture/installation based artwork and digital art. I find that the juxtaposition that is created by having the black and white projection with sound while the color tv has none is rather stark and I appreciate the disconnectedness between the two pieces of displayed media. I actually felt like there was some connection between this work and the installation I did for our most recent project in DA2 which was projection mapping, as the seemingly unconnected media that was on display actually synergized and created an entire new narrative. This kind of work speaks to me more than a lot of other art not only because I am interested in the presentation of analog objects (being a product of the digital age, there is no real tactical grounding of a lot of media as opposed to what you see in this installation) but also because I am interested in using projected video and media to create new narratives like you would by collaging words found in a newspaper.
